After cough-cough years of being out of school, I am once again a student. A college student. My husband Bob likes to joke about how he traded in his wife for a hot college freshman, and while I am flattered it still scares the bejeebies out of me to be a college student after all these years.
I did attend college for a short time immediately following high school but an opportunity for me to move to the Stone Mountain area near Atlanta to be near Bob as we were dating and the "m" word had been mentioned at the time. And when I moved to Stone Mountain, I did try to go back to school at (then) DeKalb College. Imagine my surprise to hear that (then) Macon Junior College could not transfer my transcript.
Of course I called (then) Macon Junior College to see exactly what was going on, and I found out that an "office error" had really jazzed up my college records. Long story short, Macon State College (formerly Macon Junior College) has graciously gone above and beyond to clear up their mistake and get me back in school. And it has only taken 20+ years.
All that notwithstanding, it's fun to be a Macon State college student again, even if it is scary and sometimes weird. When I got my parking decal, I noticed I was the only student in line who had to hold my ID as far away as I could to read the numbers. The people who work in the bookstore say "ma'am" to me, and when a instructor asked me if I had seen a particular note-taking protocol before, the entire class giggled when I had to remind him "I've been out of school for a while." As I recall, my first textbook was a stone tablet. Tell you anything?
On the other hand, I LOVE being in school. I love looking through the course catalog and dreaming of the classes I'll take when I get this boring old core out of my face. I may finish a degree. I may not. To be honest, I don't care. I just love being in school again!
