I honestly can't recall a time in my life that I wasn't passionate about St Augustine in particular and Florida in general. I'm sure that time existed, since I didn't get to St Augustine until I was nine. But it feels as though I was born knowing about the city so I guess that's why when I finally got to St Augustine it felt like I'd come home.
Now, every time I enter the city, I feel like that again. It's as though I've set a root down there and it tugs me. I am at my best when I am there. However, my St Augustine is not the one you see when you just look at the surface. My St Augustine is a collection of places around the city where I feel closest to those who built it and cared for it until I got there.
In St Augustine, you'll find me in shops that are actually first and second Spanish period homes. You will find me in hidden gardens and tiny parks and along streets other people often miss. I'll be the one taking pictures of windows and flowerpots and old walls. There are just too many things easily missed in the old city and I want to devour them all.
